Identity Verification
Fraud Prevention
Requires Smartphone
To combat fraud and unauthorized number changes, SASSA requires a 3D facial biometric scan before unlocking high-risk actions on your account.
Notice: 72-Hour Expiry Window
When you receive the biometric link via SMS, you must complete the scan within 72 hours (3 days). If you do not click the link in time, it will expire and you will have to request a new one from the portal.
How to Pass the Scan
The system uses advanced AI to compare your live video feed against the Department of Home Affairs photo on your green ID book or smart card.
✓
What to Do
- Face a bright window or stand in a very well-lit room.
- Use a plain background behind you (like a blank wall) if possible.
- Hold the phone steady at eye level and follow the on-screen arrows exactly.
- Ensure strong internet, preferably Wi-Fi, as the video file needs to upload.
✗
What to Avoid
- Do not wear hats, caps, or dark glasses. Clear vision of your eyes is required.
- Do not stand with your back to the sun (backlighting makes your face a dark shadow).
- Do not point the camera at a photo or ID book. It detects live 3D movement.
- Do not let someone else do the scan. It must perfectly match your DHA record.
Troubleshooting Fixes
"Camera Access Denied" Error
When you click the link, your browser will ask for permission to use the camera. If you accidentally clicked "Deny", you need to go to your browser settings (Chrome/Safari), find Site Settings or Permissions, and allow camera access for the SASSA website.
Why did it say "No Match Found"?
A "no match" error happens when the live scan does not resemble the photo Home Affairs has on file. This commonly happens if your DHA photo is very old, or if you had poor lighting during the live scan. Try again in bright daylight.
What if my link expired?
The verification link strictly expires after 72 hours for security reasons. If it expires, you must log back into the SASSA portal, re-enter your details, and request a new link to be sent to your phone.
