SASSA R350 vs R370 Grant: What Changed?
For years, the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant was famously known as the "R350 grant". However, following an announcement by the Finance Minister, the grant was officially increased. It is now widely known as the R370 grant.
If you are wondering whether you need to reapply, or if the rules have changed along with the payment amount, this guide will explain everything you need to know about the transition from R350 to R370 in 2026.
The R20 Increase
The most obvious change is the monetary value. The grant was increased by R20, bringing the total monthly payout to R370 to help beneficiaries cope with inflation and rising food prices.
Do I need to reapply?
No. If you were already receiving the R350 grant, your application was automatically rolled over to the R370 system. You do not need to submit a new application.
What about my old R350 arrears?
If SASSA owes you money for months prior to the increase, you will still be back-paid for those specific months at the old R350 rate.
The Strict R624 Income Threshold (Unchanged)
Despite the grant amount increasing to R370, the Means Test threshold remains at R624. This is a critical point of confusion for many applicants.
This means that if SASSA checks your bank account and finds that you received more than R624 in total deposits for the month, your grant will be declined for that month. It does not matter if the money was a gift from family or child maintenanceβthe R624 threshold applies to all incoming funds.
Frequently Asked Questions
