In a major announcement, the South African government has confirmed that the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, currently sitting at R370 per month, will be extended until at least March 2026. This decision provides a critical safety net for millions of unemployed South Africans who rely on this monthly stipend.
What Does This Mean for Current Beneficiaries?
If you are currently receiving the R370 grant, you do not need to reapply. Your application will continue to be assessed on a month-to-month basis. SASSA will perform their standard verification checks against the UIF, NSFAS, and bank databases to ensure your income remains below the R624 threshold.
Will the Grant Increase Again?
The grant was recently increased from R350 to R370 in April 2024. While civil society organizations are lobbying for the grant to be increased to match the food poverty line, the Treasury has not yet committed to any further monetary increases before the 2026 deadline.
Important Reminder
To ensure uninterrupted payments, make sure your banking details are up to date and that you do not receive any other funds into your account that might push you over the R624 threshold.
